AN-ANTI racist theme is behind gigs organised in Carlisle.

Carlisle Against Racism has teamed up with national charity Love Music Hate Racism to celebrate diversity in Cumbria. An up-and-coming band extravaganza at The Brickyard, Fisher Street on October 15 will feature groups from all over the UK.

In the meantime, a total of 10 local bands will play warm-up gigs at The Source, Nelson Street on September 20 and October 5.

Andy Auld, of Carlisle Against Racism, said: “Since the late 70s with the first Rock Against Racism gigs, music has been a way of bringing people from different backgrounds and cultures together.”

Organisers have invited members of Carlisle-based groups like The Chinese Association and The Community of Russian Speakers. But local artists, including The Relatives and Rob Heron, will give the nights a distinctly Cumbrian feel.

He added: “We’re not calling them anti-racist nights – it’s a more positive message than saying ‘we’re against racism.’ It’s about celebrating music and the things that it can bring to people’s lives.”

A similar gig at The Brickyard was well-attended last year, selling 270 tickets out of a possible 300. This time, Carlisle Against Racism hopes to raise enough money to fund their year-round campaigning.

Gigs at The Source are free, with all donations going to Carlisle Against Racism.

The line-up for September 20 will include:

The Relatives, Nick Jefferson, Rob Heron, My Little Madness, Laura James and John Bowie.

Performers for October 5 will include:

The Relatives, Steve McCormick and Rob Millican, plus Will Harris of Ten Tonne Wasp.

Hello!

Welcome to the blog of Carlisle Against Racism. We aim to make it a place where people can find out more about our activities, and hopefully support them!

Your involvement can make a difference in the real world promotion of postitive attitudes towards others, and in undermining doctrines of hate which contribute towards a general climate of intolerance for all in our society.

Please feel free to roam around and explore our topics. The blog is currently being developed but soon we expect to have material here on past and future music events, some essential facts and figures which dispute negative propaganda, and various perspectives on racism and its roots, both historical and psychological.
